Jackson GreenThink
It happens when blue and yellow come together for good.
Talk about a grassroots effort. Jackson GreenThink is a great example of how big ideas grow to become reality at our school. GreenThink was developed as a PTA initiative which kicked off on Earth Day, 2008. The program augments our traditional curriculum with "real world" education, keeping a focus on recycling, reducing, reusing and...rethinking many different options of how we can be more eco-friendly to our world. Its mission is to help Jackson become a healtier place for the students and for the environment, and each year, each grade works wonders to do just that.
Jackson continues to be very involved in reducing school waste by recycling - everything from cans to paper to ink cartridges - on a daily basis. Our students have earned First Place with several local recycling challenges as a result. In addition, GreenThink extends to areas including improving the quality of in-class snack programs, promoting non-toxic cleaning practices within the school and with grounds keeping, instilling No Idling zones to our carpool lanes, and conserving water and electricity. This PTA volunteer committee has also worked to provide "reusable party kits" in the classrooms, researches and disseminates green and healthy lifestyle information to teachers, as well as led Jackson to adopt the Little Green Schoolhouse model - an approach aimed at improving the environmental health and ecological sustainability of schools in the U.S.
At Jackson, we care about protecting our children's health, both in school and in the world at large.
