Do the math at Jackson, and it's easy to see how highly successful students plus a top-notch faculty plus enhanced learning facilities plus integrity-based philosophies plus aggressive academics equals an environment of excellence.

National Blue Ribbon School, a Georgia School of Excellence and an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. Another big plus? Jackson remains the only Atlanta school to earn highest Platinum honors for its CRCT scores from the Governor's Office of Accountability – and singularly attain this for three years in a row.




Not surprisingly, this focus on academic achievement seems to have a multiplying effect on other area – from teacher awards to student recognitions, including:

 

  • In 2011, Jackson was the only Atlanta-area elementary school to maintain its credential as a Georgia School of Excellence by the Georgia Department of Education, which keeps Jackson in the top 10% of schools statewide.

  • In 2010, fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Leslie Tumlin, was named Elementary Teacher of the Year by Atlanta Public Schools System. Another Jackson fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Tamara Guilday, previously received this same honor.

  • In 2010, Dr. Jane Goodall, famed paleontologist and founder of worldwide student program, Roots & Shoots, visited Jackson to personally recognize our students' many community-service endeavors. Jackson was the first school in Atlanta to affiliate with this global organization, and serves as the go-to source to help other Atlanta institutions create their own programs.

  • In 2010, Jackson's Wellness Program (a PTA initiative) was recognized and spotlighted as a role model by the Atlanta Public School System, and earned Jackson a Bronze award as a healthy school.

  • In 2010, fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Tamara Guilday, was recognized and featured on 11 Alive News as an 11 Alive Class Act Award winner.

  • Our principal, Dr. Lorraine Reich, and fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Tamara Guilday, each received the Atlanta Families' Award for Excellence in Education. This is given to those seen as having made a significant quantitative and qualitative contribution toward student success. What's more, Jackson was the only school that year to have two teachers honored simultaneously.

  • Kindergarten teacher, Mrs.Shanti Sparks, had a children's book published, Honey and the Sunset. Her manuscript was selected among hundreds of others in the Library of Congress. Mrs. Sparks not only wrote the story, but hand-painted all of the book's beautiful visuals using watercolors.

  • Dr. Reich has been chosen by the Governor's Office as one of the Top 100 High-Performing Principals in Georgia.

  • Dr. Reich was selected as a member of the Oxford Round Table in Oxford, England to discuss important contemporary educational issues and policies.

  • The Atlanta Business Chronicle has named Jackson the Best Public Elementary School in Atlanta.

  • Jackson has reached or exceeded academic targets set by the Atlanta Public Schools System every year, and our teachers receive bonuses based on those results.

  • Several Jackson teachers have been nominated for Disney Teacher Awards.
